Message from H.E. Le Luong Minh, Secretary-General of ASEAN

For six years now, we have been holding the ASEAN in Today’s World (AsTW) programme. Launched in March 2009, the AsTW was first co-organized by Kyushu University and Mahidol University. Since 2012, the AsTW has been hosted by the Ateneo de Manila University. In this span of time, 206 students from all ten ASEAN Member States as well as from Japan, South Korea, China, and some other states have participated in this educational programme.

In the course of the 2-week programme focused on ASEAN studies and Asian languages & cultures, through a combination of classroom lectures, field trips and fun activities, AsTW is one of ASEAN’s key programmes to deepen ASEAN awareness among our youth.

In line with our efforts to build the ASEAN Community by 2015, AsTW makes it possible for our students to come together, learn from each other and develop friendships across the region and beyond. This experience has further enriched their ASEAN knowledge, make them ASEAN ambassadors back in their home countries, and prepare them to become potential ASEAN leaders and responsible ASEAN citizens in the future.

To all our partner universities, educators and students involved in the programme, the ASEAN Secretariat extends its heartfelt appreciation for their efforts to promote ASEAN awareness among our youth. We commit our continuing support for the AsTW in 2014 and look forward to more years of learning and fellowship within the ASEAN Community.

ASEAN in Todayfs World (AsTW)

is a 2-week international program focusing on ASEAN and East Asia, designed for university students from around the world. The medium of instruction is English. AsTW was launched in March 2009 and has been co-organized by Kyushu University (Japan) and Mahidol University (Thailand). After successfully hosting three sessions at Mahidol University, AsTW moved to Ateneo de Manila University (the Philippines) in 2012. Having partners of Kyushu University, Mahidol University, Ateneo de Manila University and Fukuoka Women’s University, four of most prestigious universities in Asia have collaborated in the AsTW program with the strong support from the ASEAN Secretariat. .

The 2014 session will convene
from February 28, 2014 to March 14, 2014
at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines

Application deadline:November 15, 2013.

If you are a student of Kyushu University or Fukuoka Women's University,
application deadline is October 31, 2013. Please go to the Japanese site for details.

Structure of AsTW:
AsTW consists of three parts: ASEAN Studies Courses (ASC), Asian Languages & Cultures (ALC) and Study Trips, providing students with a unique study opportunity.

ASC gives AsTW a distinction as a comprehensive academic program of ASEAN issues that increasingly play an important role in the world and gASEAN+3h relations.

Students will broaden their knowledge and gain deeper understanding about ASEAN and gASEAN+3h cooperation through ASC taught by professors from Kyushu University (Japan), Ateneo de Manila University (Philippines), and Mahidol University (Thailand). A valuable part of the program is the opportunity to approach ASEAN and East Asia topics from different perspectives. Students will select one ASC course from among those offered.

In addition, students will choose one intensive Asian language course. The combination of ASC and ALC contributes to the studentsf synthetic understanding of ASEAN and East Asia.

A series of Philippine cultural field trips is another attractive part of the program. Each excursion is designed to allow students to experience Filipino culture and aesthetic sense.

To complete AsTW, students must take 2 courses (one ALC and one ASC). Students who complete AsTW will be awarded a certificate jointly signed by the Presidents of Kyushu University and Ateneo de Manila University.
