1. Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must fulfill all of the following conditions:

  1. In principle, be registered as undergraduates and majoring in Japanese studies at their home institution (first year students may not participate).
  2. Have completed Intermediate level Japanese language courses and be ready to take classes offered in Japanese at Kyushu University. Japanese Language and Culture Course is conducted in Japanese.
    *Candidates will preferably have passed Level 1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test or possess the equivalent proficiency in Japanese language.
  3. Applicants must be enrolled in a formal degree program at the home university throughout the period of attendance at Kyushu University.

2. Application Guidelines, Materials & Deadlines

JLCC applicants are required to fill in the application form in Japanese.

(1) Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarships (Japanese Studies Students)

  1. Through recommendation by a Japanese Embassy
    The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers scholarships to foreign students to study for a period of one year at designated Japanese universities in order to deepen their understanding of the Japanese language, affairs and culture. The process is different from one country to another. Please consult the Japanese Embassy or General Consulate in your country.
  2. Through recommendation by your home university
    If your home university has concluded a student exchange agreement, that includes a tuition waiver clause, with Kyushu University, it’s possible to apply the MEXT Scholarships after the screening at Kyushu University. For details, please contact to the student exchange division of your home university.

(2) Through Direct Application

Please submit following documents online by February 10. For more details, please visit the student exchange division of your home university.

3. Admission Criteria

Comprehensively screened based on following documents.

  1. Official Academic Transcript at Home University
  2. Japanese Language Proficiency Certificate
    * Applicants are required to take and complete an online placement test and an interview (if necessary) during the period of time set by International Student Center at Kyushu University. The test results are not disclosed to applicants.

  4. Letter of Recommendation from the home university
  5. Other materials

4. Tuition & Tuition Waivers

JLCC students need to pay a tuition fee, an admission fee and an examination fee as below.

A) Tuition Fee: 29,700yen (monthly fee)
B) Admission Fee: 84,600yen
C) Examination Fee: 9,800yen
  1. If you are nominated by your home university as an exchange student under a student exchange agreement that includes a tuition waiver clause with Kyushu University, you will be exempt from paying all fee above.
  2. If your application is recommended by Japanese Embassy, you will be exempt from paying tuition fee at Kyushu University.

5. Scholarship

Also, MEXT will provide a scholarship stipend of 117,000 yen per month (as of October, 2017).

  • If you are nominated by your home university as an exchange student under a student exchange agreement that includes a tuition waiver clause with Kyushu University, you will be exempt from paying all fee above.
  • In this case, you may apply for a JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) International Student Scholarship for Short-term Study in Japan with a monthly stipend of 80,000 yen, following your selection into the program.
