RENKEI Climate Change\/Energy Workshop 2024 – Net Zero by 2050 – was hosted by Kyushu University<\/em><\/h3>\r\nRENKEI, the Japan-UK Research and Education Network for Knowledge Economy Initiatives<\/a><\/u>is an international consortium of 10 Japanese and UK universities that promotes academic exchange. RENKEI is currently in its second phase, with the priority themes of Climate Change and Health, and joint research projects are actively underway.
\r\nThe onsite workshop on climate change and energy was held between December 4 and 6, 2024, hosted by Kyushu University. We welcomed around 40 participants from Both UK and Japan, with five PhD students selected via internal selection, as well as Executive Vice President Kenji Iwata and Vice President Natalie Konomi at Kyushu University.
\r\n\u30fbYan Jiang, Engineering D1\r\n\u30fbXuesong Wei, Engineering D3 \r\n\u30fbKentaro Wada, Engineering D2 \r\n\u30fbWin Ming Paing, Bioresource and Environmental Sciences D3\r\n\u30fbNadzirah Ikasari Syamsul, Design D2\r\n\r\nThe workshop, with the keyword “Achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2050”, brought together early career researchers from a wide range of fields, including science, engineering, humanities, and social sciences, to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration. Participants were divided into four groups and engaged in discussions while deepening their friendship in a short period of time through poster session, group works, site visit to TOTO Museum in Kitakyushu City.
\r\nOn Day 3, the final day, four groups made pitch presentations and gave proposals for further collaboration after the workshop. The “Best Poster Award” and “Best Pitch Award” were then voted on by all participants. Xuesong Wei was winning the Best Poster Award and the team with Win Min Paing was receiving the Best Pitch Award. Both awards include follow-up grants to support the next steps in their research collaboration.
\r\nThe workshop concluded with a campus tour to International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (WPI-I2CNER) <\/a><\/u>andCenter for Organic Photonics and Electronics Research (OPERA).<\/a><\/u>
\r\nRENKEI also had a workshop on health at Keio University’s Tsuruoka Town Campus in Yamagata between December 1 and 3, 2024. Guangqi Niu (D4, Systems Life Sciences) and Anna-Lena Muesch (D1, Bioresource and Environmental Sciences) participated in the workshop with active networking from Kyushu University.
\r\nKyushu University aims to establish a robust collaboration network for early career researchers via international consortia, and keeps continuing active participation with such opportunities.
