How should I apply for Kyushu University Scholarship?
ATW dose not accept scholarship applications. ATW scholarship
recipients will be select by the ATW steering committee based
on their assessment of each applicant's academic records, essay,
reference letter, and English ability (for non-native English
speakers). For further information, please contact the ATW Office.
How can I receive Kyushu University Scholarship?
If you were selected as a scholarship recipient, you will
be able to receive a Kyushu University scholarship of 160,000 yen for 2016. The scholarship fund covers a part of your ATW participation fees and you will be asked to pay the remainder. The sum of your participation fees will be informed you by means of a bill statement after accommodation is fixed.
How should I pay my participation fees?
ATW asks you to pay program fees in cash directly to the ATW office
in the first week of the program. You have one week
for exchanging currency or cashing traveler's checks to make
enough cash yen after arriving in Japan.
It is also possible to pay by international remittance, but you must meet every
charge associated with the international remittance. Please refer
to the
Payment of the fees.
How much is the estimated cost to participate in ATW?
Estimating costs for participating
in ATW
- 91,800JPY for tuition fee
- 150,000JPY-240,000JPY for accommodation fee
- 10,000-30,000JPY for commuting expenses (by public
transportation)
- 3,000JPY for
a Japanese language text book
- 24,500JPY for
lunch and dinner at a university cafeteria (700yen x 35days)
- 28,000JPY for three optional study trips
These costs are merely
indicative. Personal expenses and expensese for a round-trip
airline ticket are not included in the costs mentioned
above. If you live in a furnished apartment, breakfast and dinner cost should be added to this estimating costs.
How can I receive
an official transcript for the courses I took on ATW?
ATW will send you two copies of an official
transcript (in sealed envelope respectively) along with a certificate
of program
completion by regular mail by the end of September. They will be
send to your contact address entered in your ATW application form.
If you need to be sent to another address, you should consult
the ATW Office before September.
When and how can I receive my host family's
information?
ATW needs some time to select a host family to each of ATW
students, and expects to finish all arrangement at the end of
May or early
in June.
We
will forward the host family's information to
you as soon as finishing.
When and how can I receive accommodation
information and how can I apply?
Accommodation information and application forms will be sent to the students who are admitted to ATW.
When and how should we move to my host
family's house?
If your accommodation arrangement is a combination of dorm/apt and 3 weeks in home
stay, you will move to your host family's house on Saturday of the fourth week at ATW. We ask your
host family to come to your dorm/apt by car and bring you and your baggage home
with them.
Is
any airport transportation available?
ATW will offer you a free transportation from Fukuoka Airport to your accommodation. When you arrive at Fukuoka, ATW Office staff and some peer tutors will come to the airport
to pick you up. If your peer tutor can not come to pick up, you can meet him/her at the first day of ATW.
Can I
exchange currency or cash traveler's checks in Japan?
Yes, you can.
If you arrive at the Fukuoka International Airport, you can exchange
currency or cash traveler's cheque at the airport.
However, if you arrive at the
Fukuoka Domestic Airport after 3:00pm via Narita, Kansai
or Nagoya, currency exchange
is not available at the domestic airport. ATW recommends you to change money
at Narita or Kansai before leaving for Fukuoka.
Currency exchange and cashing traveler's checks are available at major
post offices located in the city and Japanese bank offices. Post offices
are open
until 5pm while banks are until 3pm on weekdays. That means post offices
are more convenient for you.
International cash card ATM (PLUS, Cirrus, VISA, AMEX, Maestro, MasterCard, UnionPay, JCB) are available in Seven-Eleven convenience stores located in the town. However, some card companies set upper limit of withdrawal per one transaction. Please check with your card company beforehand.

Can I buy a mobile phone in Japan?
Foreign
nationals with a short-term stay cannot buy a mobile phone or prepaid mobile phone. If you need, you should buy
a mobile in your home country and bring it with you. Please note that Japanese
mobile telephone system is unique and you should check if a phone works in
Japan before purchasing.
How can I make phone calls from a dormitory
or my host family's house?
If you use a telephone equipped in your room in a dorm,
you will be charged when you moving out.
Both for making a call from a dorm and your host family's
house, we recommend you to buy an international call card at Narita,
Kansai or Fukuoka
Airport,
or
at convenience
stores located in the city. When you make a phone call from
your dorm by means of an international call card,
you will
dial the number written on the card. Calling charge rate is lower
than for normal international call. If you want to buy a call card
at the airport on arrival, please ask
ATW
staff
or
peer
tutors there.
Should I need to bring an audio
device for language learning?
ATW Japanese teachers suggested that you need any audio device,
such as ipot, CD player, and so on, when you study Japanese
language. Please bring one with you.
Internet access.
You can access the Wireless LAN in and around the International Student Center and Central Library on campus with your own computer which is equipped with any wireless LAN device. You can get your ID to access the wireless LAN at the orientation. Internet access is also available in a dormitory and hotel. Again, you need to bring your own computer to access the internet.
Transportation networks in Fukuoka
city
Transportation system in Fukuoka city is compact and convenient.
The following transportation networks are developed in the city,
Urban Subway, Nishitetsu Bus, Nishitetsu Omuta Train and JR (Japan
Railway) Train.
Kyushu University's nearest station is Hakozaki-Kyudaimae Station
on Urban Subway line, Kyudai-Kitamon or Kyudai-mae on Nishitetsu
bus network, Hakozaki Station on JR Train line. The downtown
and the transportation hub in the city is Tenjin. Hakata station
is
the hub station of JR train and Shinkansen in Kyushu Island.
