OVERVIEW

The Graduate School of Human-Environment Studies was established with the aim of developing interdisciplinary research that takes a cross-sectional approach to both the humanities and sciences. We play an important role in studies within Asia of course and further internationally, and offer degree courses in English in our three departments.

As the world grapples with depleting natural resources and global climate change, the need for experts in developing low-carbon and resource-efficient buildings and urban centers has never been more critical. In response to this pressing global challenge, the Department of Urban Design, Planning, and Disaster Management and the Department of Architecture are offering international master's and doctoral courses in sustainable architecture and urban systems. Our courses go beyond theoretical knowledge, providing hands-on experiences and real-world case studies that demonstrate the practical effects of sustainable practices. They equip students with the interdisciplinary skills to navigate complex challenges and create thriving urban centers.

The Department of Education has actively promoted research and educational exchange, particularly in Asia. For example, the Comparative Education Society of Asia (CESA), was founded in 1996 mainly by Kyushu University. The objective of the International MA Course in Educational Studies is to train future professionals who can develop a rich, diverse and cross-border perspective, who can promote education and research in pedagogy and psychology from an international perspective in the Asian region and beyond. In addition, a Double Degree Programme with National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) has started from 2022, which will extend the opportunity for students to study in Japan and in Taiwan to further develop their research skills and develop a rich academic society from the Asian region.

Student’s Voice

What is your research about?
As an architect I have always been passionate about the power of light and its influence in our built environment. The international program alongside the permanent support of the Architectural Lighting Laboratory and my supervisor provided me with the resources and space to pursue my goals and so for the last three years I have been researching methods to shape buildings using natural light by incorporating computational aid design to guide the process in which a building would be transformed to optimize the integration of daylight into its spaces.
What is an advantage of Kyushu University?
Beyond my research, Kyushu University offered me the opportunity to broaden my horizons with a multidisciplinary and diverse environment paired with experiences abroad such as workshops at PNU in South Korea and courses that lead me to travel to Cambodia, and the USA for entrepreneurship and design thinking workshops. I will always be thankful to all the teachers and students that contribute to my amazing experience here.
