    Visa Application

Application Procedures for Japanese entry visas

To apply for a visa, the applicant must apply in person to an embassy or consulate. There is no system by which a proxy can carry out the application procedures in Japan.

When applying for a visa at an embassy or consulate, the documents to be submitted or shown differ according to the purposes of the visit, so please make inquiries to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or an embassy or consulate beforehand and then apply with the necessary documents.

A visa itself does not guarantee landing (status of residence) permission. Please note that possession of a visa is just one condition for application for landing at an airport or seaport.
Although there are some countries that do give visas the function of a guarantee of landing permission, most countries, like Japan, have a system which requires permission from immigration authorities as well as a visa.

1.「Short-term Stays」

Short-term stays refer to temporary visits of up to 90 days, excluding profit-making operations and paid activities:
Visa Category Status of residence Term of residence
Temporary Visitor's Visa Temporary Visitor 90 days or 15 days
Transit Visa Temporary Visitor 15 days

Due to Visa Exemption Arrangements, visas are not required for nationals of certain countries and regions if certain conditions are met. As of February 2008, Japan had taken measures concerning the waiver of visa requirements with 62 countries and regions. Please see List of Countries and Regions that have Visa Exemption Arrangements with Japan.

If you wish to stay over 90 days, "Permission to extend term of residence" is required when you wishe to remain in Japan under the same status of residence after the originally authorized term of residence has expired. Applications must be made before the term of residence expires. You need to complete this renewal procedure at your nearest immigration authority. Please inquire at your nearest immigration authority (not the Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
