Japan-Sweden MIRAI Global Challenges Internship (Study Visit) Program for PhD students [Application by Aug.17]

MIRAI is an academic consortium comprising 17 universities from Sweden and Japan, aiming to promote bilateral academic exchange. In Phase 3, which began in January 2024, the consortium focuses on four key areas aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), facilitating researcher collaboration through both in-person and online formats.

1)Health and an ageing population (UN-SDG #3)
2)Climate adaptation, disaster and risk management and prevention (UN-SDG #13)
3)Resilient cities and communities (UN-SDG #11)
4)Materials for energy conversion and storage (UN-SDG #7)

Kyushu University has been a member of MIRAI since its inception and currently serves as the coordinating university on the Japanese side for Phase 3 (term: 3 years). The university also operates the Kyushu University Stockholm Liaison Office, established in 2020, as its European base to further strengthen academic exchange with Europe through MIRAI and other initiatives.

From November 16 to 21, 2025, an in-person academic and industry collaboration program will be held at the University of Gothenburg and local companies in Sweden. Kyushu University is seeking one doctoral student (PhD candidate) to participate in this program, aiming to foster the development of early career researchers (ECRs) through the MIRAI framework.

Eligibility
Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
1)Be enrolled in a doctoral program (PhD course) at Kyushu University during the program period.
2)Conduct research in a field related to one of the MIRAI focus areas listed above.
3)Be willing to actively engage with other participants, expand their research network, and contribute to future MIRAI activities.
*The program will be conducted in English.
*While MIRAI’s official call includes “PhD students or postdocs,” Kyushu University limits eligibility to PhD students only due to internal funding regulations.
